The Polk City Community Library will be offering the Geri-Fit® strength
training exercise program for older adults starting in September. The
Geri-Fit program is designed to build strength, improve balance and
coordination, increase endurance, and enhance range of motion. Participants start out by using a set of light dumbbell weights and then, as their strength increases, they can use heavier dumbbells in order to build even more strength and balance. Most of the bodybuilding exercises are performed seated in chairs and there is no choreography, dancing or floor work.
Because one pound of muscle is lost each year past the age of 50, it’s
important that older adults retain and build muscle as they continue to
age. Although walking is an excellent form of exercise for older adults, it
is not enough to build the muscular strength in the legs and hips. The
American College of Sports Medicine recommends adults over the age of 60 to lift weights two-times-a-week.
The Polk City Community Library, located at 1500 W. Broadway, will be
holding Geri-Fit® classes on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00-1:45 starting September 23.

Classes are at no cost and are open to any older adult age 50 and over.

Participants should bring their own set of light dumbbell weights (2-3 lbs)
and water to drink. Stretch bands will be provided.

Mark your calendars!
Monday, September 9, 4:00pm to 10:30pm, on the Town Square, join the Channel 13 RVTV Team to kick off the week long Iowa State/Iowa tailgate party.
